Compare the whole cost
A replacement price may not include delivery, installation, removal of the old appliance, or changes needed to fit a new model. Compare those costs with the proposed repair, rather than the advertised appliance price alone.
Consider the appliance’s overall condition
A single repair on an otherwise dependable appliance is a different decision from repeated failures. Mention previous repairs, ongoing problems, and how the appliance has performed.
Ask about parts and the proposed repair
Find out what component has failed, whether the part is available, the expected next steps, and what warranty applies. Age alone does not tell you whether a repair is sensible.
There is no one-size-fits-all percentage rule
Your budget, replacement options, appliance condition, and the diagnosed fault all matter. An estimate is a starting point for your decision, not an obligation to proceed with a repair.
Your comparison checklist
- Diagnosis and total proposed repair price
- Parts availability and timing
- Written warranty coverage
- Replacement, installation, delivery, and removal costs
- Past problems and the appliance’s overall condition
